The Distant Sound – A sound concert with Susan Philipsz

During the summer a sound will be heard at Tjolöholm every whole hour between the hours of 10 am-18 pm. The artist Susan Philpsz has created “The Distant Sound” with inspiration from the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian coastal geography and cultural history. Grimeton Radio Station outside Varberg will send the sound out to nine different places, from Bornholm in the south to Moss in the north, also including Tjolöholm. The sound contains tones, recorded using horn instruments and taken from older radio vignettes. With this Philipsz encourages us to reflect over our local cultural landscape in a new context.
The piece is part of “In Site” – an EU-based cooperation initiative between nine cultural institutions and regions in the area around Öresund, Kattegatt and Skagerrak, including Hallands Art museum and Region Halland.

Christmas at Tjolöholm castle

In november the atmospheric Christmas market will take place for the twenty seventh year in a row. Last year around 25,000 people visited the Christmas market during its eight days to enjoy traditional Christmas spirit. Hundreds of artisan and smallscale food producers show and sell their products. Coffee is served in the castle dining room. Father Christmas receives the children’s wish lists and the estate is decorated for christmas.

28th Nov – 21st Dec

Christmas buffet at the castle

Buffet guests start their christmas celebrations in the Moorish smoking room where the housemaids, in their turn of the century outfits, serve ”glögg” and the castles own gingerbread biscuits. An open fire crackles warmly in the castle hall and almost all the room is taken up by the large Christmas buffet. All sorts of delicacies, inspired by the castles rich menus, have been prepared and laid out by master chef Jerker Andersson. The main meal is taken in the castle dining hall, as it always has been, generation after generation.

28 Nov – 21 Dec

Christmas buffet in Storstugan restaurant

It’s hard to find a more cozy place to eat your christmas lunch than in Tjolöholms ”National Romantic” Storstugan. The estates workers have celebrated christmas here for almost a hundred years and this Swedish ideal is clearly inspired by Ellen Keys’ and Carl Larssons’ domestic ideal. Each detail has been carefully chosen and designed with great skill and craft. The christmas buffet consists of local, ecological produce and is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm until 4pm.
